WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. The Hon. J. 0. W. Aitken presided at a meeting of the Wellington Education Board to-day, and other^ members present wore: Messrs J. Kebbel, A. W. Hogg, R. A. Wright, T. Forsvth, T. Moss, E. H. Penny, G. London, W. H. Field, and W. Allan. The financial statement* presented showed a credit of £306 15s Jd on the buildings account and of £70 12s 3d on the wcontractors' deposit account. Debit balances were shown as fol}ows- General account, £1456 2s 9d; technical, £93 18s od; manual, £74 8s lid; secondary. £775 6s 9d; teachers -salaries £158" l7s 7d. The total debit balance'was given at £2181 6s 7d. Grants due from the Government wore sot out in detail, totalling £6636 i3s. Incluidcd in this amount were the items: Classes, 191G, April to November, Wellington £262 15s, Mnrlborough £52 10s. The application of Mrs Chris Smith, Lower Rivcrlands, regarding lodging allowance, was approved. The executive presented a report concerning the installation --of hot water services at certain residences.
The chairman pointed out that an expenditure of £1.426 would be involvei, and, on his suggestion, it was decided to expend £715 on 23 schools in the No. 1 fist.
An intimation was received from the Government to the effect that subsidies on trust lands, trust donti^ lions, will be granted, subject in each case to compliance with the regulations as to the purposes to which the money will be devoted.
A notice of motion standing iri tbo name of Mr W. Allan was held over until the first meeting in January. It read as follows: "That the. question •of proficiency examinations be considered by the Board at an early meeting in iihe New Year with a view towards raising the age limit in country schools. 3'" The postponement was agreed to in order ti> give country members an opportunity of taking part in the discussion. Following on a recent suggestion for Hid establishment of a small school at Melrose. the secretary (Mr Gr. L. St/ewart) submitted a- report showing the population that would be served by such a school. 'As. 0 result, of the report the Board decided not to entertain "i'he proposal. Mr Wright said th it he hoped the matter would not bo forgotten, and that a site would bo secured before the price of land became too high.
