EXPEDITION TO RESCUE THE PARTY.
DISCOVERY' BEING FITTED OUT. [PeBSS ASBOOIATION.I Australian and N.Z. Cable Association LONDON, July 23. The Press Bureau states: In view of the possibility of the failure of bir Ernest Shackleton's third attempt in a small vessel to rescue the twenty-two members of the party on Elephant Island, and at his most urgent re3uest the Government has decided to espatch a vessel from. England, at the earliest moment. Seeing that no suitable wood vessel was available at any South American port, the Hudson, Bay Company most generously placed ; at'the Admiralty's disposal the Discovery, specially built for Antarctic exploration, as long ns she is required, fhu.s her service will bo free of all cost. ■ Lieut.-Commander James Fairweather, of the Naval Volunteer Re- 1 serve, who is an experienced icemaster, has been appointed to command the Discovery. She is now being fitted out at the naval dockyard at Deconport. When completed, unless news arrives of Shackleton's success, slio will proceed to Elephant Island, embarking Sir Ernest Shackleton en route.
Ifc is expected that the Discovery will have no difficulty in reaching her destination. It is sincerely hoped that fhe will be successful in rescuing the stranded men.
