THJE LINE STRAIGHTENED
SANGUINARY DEFEAT OF GER-
MAN OFFENSIVE.

A communique says:: TKfoesre was a violent all-day battle on the whole Avoeourt-Cumieres front, reaching to the eastern bank of the river. The premeditated evacuation of Bethincourt sailent, effected. on Saturday jiight. enabled "us to straighten the line from Avqcourt redoubt to' the north-east of Haucourt. Tliis line resisted the most furious assaults.
A German, offensive on the Mor-thomme-Cunueres front was sanguinarily defeated. Our machineguns and artillery scattered1 dens© formations issuing from Oumieres wood. Hundreds were killed. All attempts at Morthommei were driven back with great losses. , A simultaneous .^offensive against -the positions between Avocourt wood and gorges. Brook met with a desj^erate resistance, and were everywhere repulsed; The enemy gained a footing in trenches north-east of A.vocourt, but were immediately -ariven out.
