DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
A four-roomed cottage at the corner of Redwood Street and Alabama Road, "'.owned and occupied by Mr W.iltcr Smith, was, with its contents, destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The occupants of the . house left at about seven o'clock to attend a picture-show, and then everything '.was apparently safe. A neighbor discovered the outbreak at about 9.30; but, :t being somewhat isolated, thy cottage was fully alight before assistance 'arrived, and nothing was saved. ■Plie building Avas insured for £180. the furniture for £75, and a pianola for.£Bs. all the amounts being in thi.t State office. A somewhat tardy alarm was rung on the, firebells, but.the services of the Fire Brigade were noc called into requisition. >

A two-storey boarding-house in Gladstone Street, owned by T. H. White and occupied by Mrs M. Impey, was gutted by fire last night There were thirteen boarders asleep when the alarm was given. - All rushed into the street in their night attire. George Storey, aged 40, employed, as clerk to the Postal* Department, returned! for his ''trousers and was - overpowered by smoke. A res-, cuer found him enveloped in flames. He was badly burned, and was taken to the hospital. His condition is serious, but his injuries are not expected to prove fatal.
