THE PERRY TRAGEDY.
ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT
[Press Association.]
AUCKLAND, Nov. 30. The trial of .Amelia Perry, charged with the murder of her husband, was continued to-day. 'Colonel Hazard, who has had fifteen years' experience as a gunmaker, deposed to making experiments in the room where the tragedy occurred. He concluded that tiie gun must have been fired downwards at Perry's .head while lie lay on the bed. He did not consider that a fatal shot could have been fired through the window. He produced a sheet of cardboard at which he had fired the gun at various distances. He considered that the mark made when the muzzle was two feet from the card corresponded best with the serrated edge of, Perry's head.
Gordon McDowell, a laborer, showed reluctance to answer questions in regard to his relations with Perry and his wife.
The Crown Prosecutor suggested that he might bo treated as a hostile witness.
His Honor said that the witness was m a peciliar position and entitled to claim the privileges of a man in that position. The witness continued to answer questions in a guarded way. McDowell detained to answer questions whether he cohabited with MrsPerry. He said that the night before the murder he slept in the same room •as Sutton, on thLvlatter.'s place. Hedid not leave the hpuse c all .night. WillianV "Sutton corroborated' ■McDowell's .statement. *
Chief-Detective MacMahon said that the accused. was arrested after she had told a number of lies aibout McDowell. The Superintendent' of Police was present. They were satisfied that McDowell had "nothing^ to do with the murder.
The case for the Crown has concluded.
