j^ho El Cordobes, a cargo boat from -Liverpool, which arrived at Brisbane last week, claims to be the first British «eep sea vessel to try the experiment of substituting woman service in respect to some of the lighter occupations on a vessel.; A correspoadent of a Sydney paper states that while women are considered to be a success for short voyages, the opinion is hold that the experiment on deep Vsea going vessels, so far as it has been tried, has not proved-a.complete success.

The Wellington City Council has decided to grant free passes to the municipal baths .to aty children who ■pass a simple test in life-saving set by the- British Life-Saving Society. This test consists of a candidate being able to swim iifty yards (breast stroke), twm.ty-fivo yards on tho back, and diving (whilst, swimming) some _ five feet to the bottom and bringing up a 51b weight, together with a simple exposition of restorative measures. The object is to encourage children to learn' how to savo life.

A deplorable fate overtook 10,000 trout fry despatched recently to Te Kiiiti^by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. A letter was received from the local club stating that when the fry arrived safely and in good condition they were left in the tanks on Iho river bank for the night; as had been done previously. The next* day, however, when the officials of tho club went to liberate them,"they found most of them lying dead on the bottom of the tanks. The fish had. a swollen appearance, and, feelingly wrote the .secretary of the club, "thereis no doubt in mygmind that some evilminded wretch had tampered with the cann. and had poisoned tho fish." The society therefore regretfully ma.de an urgent request for a further 10,000 fry.
