LETTER OF A SURVIVOR
DUNEDIN. Oct. 20
Gunner.Webb, of Duriedin, of No. 2 Howitzer Battery, was on the torpedoed transports Tn a letter,to his father lie says ,
"T was in''i boat v.-hifh. capsijred. There were 57 men in the. boat, eightabove the full complement. The ship was; torpedoed at 9.45 a.m. We were picked up by n French torpedo-boat at 2.15 r>.in. Two torpedops were fired. One hit the ship. The deck on which we were sleeping " ras blo-vvn to matchwood. Several men were
killed. The troops wero orderly, but one of the crew in the boat was unuer.wd, and cut one of the falls, .ami so capsized the lot of us into the water. Only three of our crowd were missing, and the whole 'ship's .deathroll did not reach 30."
