CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR OUR BOYS

[to the editor.]

Sir,--I think perhaps it may in- | terest your readers to learn that the readers of The Press have subscribed, upwards of £1000 for the purpose of sending Christinas parcels to the soldiers from the Canterbury military district; who are figTiting for the Eim- ; piro »\t the front. Thanks to the kind co-operation of the local branch of the Lady Liverpool Fund, upwards of 5000 parcels are being sent con- ! .taming chocolates, two tins of con- ] densed milk, writing paper, pocket- j handkerchiefs, nnd various other use- | ful articles, and arrangements are being made with the Oversees Club to supplement tliis by sending to each man 50 cigarettes and one quarter of a pound of tobacco. Several of our readers having suggested that plum puddings ought to have been enclosed in the parcels, I am now inviting subscriptions with the view of supplying this deficiency. There is not time to send the puddings from here, but I have made arrangements by Avhich a one-pound Christmas pudding securely packed in a tin can be sent out from London for each member ot j the Canterbury contingent, at a total j cost of about ;£3OO. Both these gifts i are being sent to the men from the whole of the Canterbury military dis- , trict, which includes Westland, Marlborough, and Nelson, as well as the Canterbury province, so that if any of your readers would like to send a small donation in aid of the Plum . Pudding Fund it will bo gratefully re- ] ceived. May I add,- however, that : such donations should be.forwarded at once if thejr are to be of any use, as owing to the great demand for Christmas puddings for the soldiers at the front, it will be necessary for tne to place the order in London within the next few days. i THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS, j Christchurch, Oct. 12. -j
