'OWING TO THE RIGA FAILURE

(Received Aug. 29, 3.30 p.nO PETROGRAD, Aug. 28. The German failure at the Gulf of necessitated a readjustment of the enemy's plans. All yon Buelow's unfantry, which were replaced l>y '■cavalry, were .sent to Wilkonnr for an •«ffersivo against Vilna from the -^lorth, while the siege troops from "Kovno advanced from the north --west, yon Eichorn from the- west.
The General Staff states that the "Berlin reports that Brest-Li to vsk fell Sifter assault are not true. It had •previoiTsly been decided that it was :nexr>°dient to shut up a garrison of "100.000. Consequently the' most •valuable material was removed in •good time. The forts on the left ■-4ide of the Bug only resisted in order ■to ?llow the armies to retreat east•warH. When this was effected the ■forfifK-.ilions and bridges were dcs-Tro-pd and the garrison rejoined the ft eld-army.
