RUDYARD KIPLING AT THE FRONT.
EARNESTNESS OF THE FRENCH
(Received Aug. 27, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON,-. Aug.' 26
Mr Rudyard Kipling,, after a visit to the west front, writing to the Daily Telegraph, says:—"France is not merely fighting" this war—she's living it, and. with a gaiety and a high heart that does not hide a cold, deadly earnestness and tenacity of purpose. The whole of France is working at the utmost pressure, soaked with strong determination. We will reach that otage in time. It is not yet realised how France is living the w.ar. AYe -must be made to understand. Have we conceived that in France every man is assigned his duty by the military and that-every woman is engaged in war duties? There is no time for anything else. It is marvellous to see the readiness, endurance, and light-heartediiess of the Frenchman. , AH agree that the only o-ood Boche is «. dead Boche. °"I saw a parade of 40,000. The absence of ceremonial made it all the more impressive, because it was simply the passing of hard-bitten'fighting men. ; I watched the efficiency of the 75-millimetre guns, the officers working ®bo 30 yards clearance over their own infantry/ "Nothing England can do is enough to keep abreast of such an Ally."
