On the recommendation of the matron, Misses. O'Neill and Kelleher, whose term of probationer ship expired last month, were appointed to the permanent nursing staff of' the Wairau Hospital at yesterday's meeting pi' the Board.
The death is announced, by a Press Association telegram , from Greymouth, ,of Mr Florence: McCarthy Jt a well-known, journalist; aged 80 years. For many ■ years Mr McCarthy was editor ol* the Grey River Argus, ,' . retiring a few months ago. ■.'•:: Mr Philip Snowden, Socialist Mem-' ; ber for Blackburn in the British House of Commons, and Mrs Snowden have sailed from Vancouver, in the Marama, and are expected to. reach Auckland on September 23rd. Snbsequently they will tour the Dominion. The DeaJi of Christchurch. has received news that his son, Mr Charles • 38 Carringfcon, who left for a trip to England last April ? is joining a battalion of the Birmingham contingent for service at the front.
