POULTRY SHOW
A REPRESENTATIVE EXHIBI- { i
TION
A RECRUDESCENCE OF IN-
TEREST,
The accession of interest in poultry matters in this district of late is viewed with satisfaction by those who have remained staunch to the fancy during its period of retrogression, and the show at present being held by the Maryborough Poultry Association in the Town Hall is of such vii improved character as to encourage the Jiope that the hobby will ultimately be restored to its previous high plane in popular estimation. Larger shows have been held here, but the fact that the entries on this occasion represent a large increase on those ot recent years and thai? the quality of the birds is so uniformly, high 'have induced the spirit of cheery optimism. The entries approximate 400, and exhibitors from Wellington, Nelson, Picton, and ;tfasterton have contributed largely to the merit, as well as the numerical strength, of many of the classes. One noticeable feature of the show.is the large number of canaries and pigeons entered for competition, and Wellington fanciers are well represented in this hitherto neglected division. Mr B. Robinson (Wellington) .scored heavily with 'his Norwich canaries, while Messrs E. B. Martin (Nelson), J. A. Stringer (Nelson), and 'TV. McCarlie ("Wellington) also exhibited some fine birds wthich met with their due success. The New Zealand championship for fantail pigeons was Avon without much opposition by Mr C. Sowman (Wellington), and Messrs L. A. Wad-dam (Masterton) and F. G. Rawson (Nelson) secured the majority of. theprizes in other pigeon classes. In the open poultry classes Black O'rping.tons made up an attractive division, and honors were divided between Messrs A. Sowma« and J. A. Batching, the latter 'securing a New Zealand championship with a cockerel. It was evident that Langshans and Plymouth Rocks have gone out of public favor, but this, could.not be said of Minorcas and Dorkings, which were stronger than for many years. Messrs C. A. Forrest, A. 0. Elliott, and J. Blundell (Nelson) exhibited Minorcas successfully, .while birds shown by Messrs W. Fairhall and' W. Black in the Dorking class 'were strongest in quality. In the utility classes competition wast keen in many" instances, and seventeen White Leghorn pullots were presented to the discriminating eye of the judge. The two New Zealand utility championships "were won by Mr J. A. Kitching (Wyandottes) and Mr K. McLennan (Orpingtons) with two handsome birds. Generally speaking, a fine collection of poultry has been arranged, and the appearance of the birds fully bears out the statements, of the judges (Messrs Geo. Patchett and Geo. Wareham) that quality is a very strong point this year. The show was numerously patronised yesterday, and will be open tonight. This afternoon a baby snow was expected to attract much attention. The arrangements have been well carried out, and the secretarial duties have'1 been {successfully undertaken by Mr J. A. Kitching. The prize-list is as follows:—
