Wednesday. T?he Debating Hall" was well filled on Saturday night, when the fir,st debate of the season took place, the subject being, "Will the East conquer the We&t?" A Blenheim'team ■■took the affirmative and the local team the negative. After an interesting; contest the visitors -won by a small majority. Last time the Blenheim speakers, were here they, were easily beaten; but on Saturday night they deserved their win.
Abouifc midnight on Monday one of the heaviest earthquakes felt for some time was experienced. Work at the .Golden Bar is progressing very satisfactorily, although on Friday week ,a number of men were .knocked off owing to the shortage of water, which allowed of only live heads of stampers working.
