ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

[toVthe editor.]

&y* : — With the ever-increasing motor traffic on our Blettheim-Nelson-mam road, it is withS^a' "certain amount of pleasure I write these few lines. At Havelock Suburban there is a very dangerous point known as McDowell Point. On passing this point, I was struck by what seems to me a very easy and cheap road to be formed by inakiug a cut straight' behind the point, I believe less than £20 would make an almost straight and nearly level road. I spoke to Mr W. Gate and Mr G. Newman, who both said they would give £1 towards the cost if the road were put straight through. Why I think this work could be done' so cheaply is because, though the point is solid rook in front, it appears to me that them is a dip behind, and by taking the road on about 4 feet higher level than tho point is at present two men would, I think, make a road in one week. I hope the chairman of the Pelorus Road Board will make an early inspection of this place, and if what appeared to me he iinds correct, the work should be put in hand at once. I might say I did not get out of the trap to inspect, but I am .confident the road can be put there at a very small cost.
