GARDEN FETE.
PROSECUTION OF ARRANGE-
MENTS
Prospects for an entertainment of ■unusual merit are brightening considerably as the Garden Fete Executive proceeds with the arrangement of details for the carnival to be held on the High School ground" on December 10th. At a meeting of the Executive held on Wedmesda.y evening there vras an attendance of aibout twenty. His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. S. Pairker) presided. Mr W. B. Fraser-Tytler intimated that Mr J. H. Holdaway had agreed to assist him in making arrangements for floral events.
A recommendation that a oyele gymkhana be adided to the programme was adopted. Satisfactory reports werte received from the committees in charge of the side-shows, competitions, and ticket*. Mr R. Waters was delegated to assist im arranging for a boxing entertainment.
Miss Healy reported.that the ladies' committee had allocated the control of the various stalls as follows/. — Produce and fruit, Mesdames C. H. Mills and R. H. Smale; fruit salad and ice cream, Mrs Fred Redwood; sweets, Mrs E. H. Ball; .soft drinks, Mrs Redwood; cigars and cigarettes, Miss Penney; lunoll.counter,. Mrs. F. Mogridge: tea kioeks, Mesdames Hay, Todd, Stone, and Miss Ball; Mesdiaimes Craven, Innes, T. Pike, and F. W. Dodson; fortune-teller, Mrs White; baby oreohe, Mrs Handcook.
It was notified that the Horticultural Sooiety had agreed to arrange for a sweet pea display in the High Sdhool.
It was reported that Mr R. Heyward had offered to provide and establish a merry-go-round at the fete on condition that he received 60 per cent of the first £10 of the takings ajid 40 per cent, of^ the remainder of the receipts. The offer was readily accepted. Mr Spence announced that Mr V. N. Beasley lmd consented to act as general (secretary. Intimation having been received! that Mr E. W. Rose would bo unable to assume control of the* musical portion of the programme, Mr C. A. Forrest was appointed musical director.
The question of entertainment for the evening having been introduced, a sub-committee comprising Miss Maonab and Messrs J. M. Hardin, E. W. Rose, and T". A. Revell were appointed to make arrangements, and to consider the advisability of holding a fireworks display. It was decided to close the ground between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the day of the fete, the cost of re-admis-sion to be one shilling; and to write to the Railway Department to request the delay of the evening train on that occasion until 10 o'clock.
