HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

'/THE'SPRING SHOW.-

Perhaps a better display of flowers i and vegetables would have been se- [ cured if the Spring Show of the Marlborough Horticultural Society had j been iixedi for a iater date, but, ; nevertheless, a presentable and interesting exhibition met the eye in the Town Hall yesterday. The arrangement of the exhibits was excellent, the entries being set off to the best possible advantage.' The most prominent features were the colleo tions of roses and decorated exhibits. The Society is indebted to Picton growers for a considerable measure of j the success it achieved, Miss Harwood j and Mr G..J. Riddell,-of that town, j contributing largely to the merit'of the rose section. The, former, forwarded the best six in the open class, including the champion bloom, which was a charming William Shean. Mr 'Itiddell entered the winning twelve, ■which were an even lot in good condition. In the novice department Mrs R. Scott, a new exhibitor, scored with her collections of six and three, which were of sufficient merit to compete in any section. Mrs Lord, who was awarded the second prize, was but a few points behind. The general appearances were much enhanced by an exhibition of roses sent by the Blenheim Bowling (Club, and a, stand of cut blooms arranged by a combination of members of the Society, and which occupied about one hundred feet of floor space. Among other specially attractive exhibits were the splendid New Zealand fern entered i by Miss Keating, and a notable! Amaryllis raised by Mr Aberbart. The children's section was a meritorious one. The best of -the decorated bas- j kets by girls under 16 years of age was the work of K. Hale, and was a j tasteful arrangement of pyrethrums. Master- Trevor Fisher, 12 years of age, also deserves praise for his excellent basket.. ; The vegetable class, though only moderately well filled, was characterised by good quality. A -co-lection entered by the boys of St. Mary's School was considered by idle judges -to be of sufficient- merit for a special prize of 10s. A specimen of silver beet shown by Miss Chaytor for exhibition only was a good ;. advertisement of the capabilities of this plant. The decorative exhibits, which included seven dinner .-tables, made for speotatoi-ial effect. Miss Clouston's lamp shade was an original' conception, well executed, :and with a fine: color scheme. One of the most striking; objects of interest, and certainly the"; one that required the most labor, was i a bungalow; creation"'. •■-'designed amd constructed by Mrs Fred Redwood. It was a presentment- in imitation brick with latticed windows', and a roof in appropriate, style, and it was usedi for tho p^lrposes of a sweets stall. • The Show, which was well managed by the committee with Mr Bert Tasker as the secretary, was numerously attended last night. •.Following is the prize list:— > THE PRIZE LIST.
