He stated that he had been feeling a bit "off color, and had Had two drinks and a .cigar. He was really more "mesmerised" than drunk when the constable had come along to arrest v him. The plea of "mesmerism," however, had no effect on the court, and the man was sentenced tp seven days' imprisonment, with hard labor, in order to recover from the effects of his trance.
