From Khlartoum comes the news of the death of Father Ohrivalder. He was captured by the, Mahdists in 1882, and remained "in captivity ; for eight years. . ■ . : Mr Oolin Gilray, of Dunedm, who i went to Britain six years ago* as a I Rhodes scholar and distinguishel him-, ! self in football, has been called to the Bar. He is now on his way back to New Zealand. A Wellington Pi-ess Association telegram states that the death occurred on Saturday of Mr W.* P. Davie, a former [resident of Cnristchureh, and father of Mrs F. M. B. Fisher. The deceased gentleman was 85 years of age. ■ • The Rev. Vallance Cook, who is at present holding a series of evangelical sea-vices in Blenheim, was accorded a civic welcome on Saturday evening. After the Tenth Mounted Regimental Band had rendered a couple of selections from the deghorn rotunda, his Worship the Mayor (Mr EL S. Parker) extended to Mr Cook a hearty welcome to the town. He mentioned that Mr Cook had been a member of the Hackney Borough Council, and had served on.a number of important committees engaged in social reform in the Old Country. , The Her. Mir Cook acknowledged the Mayor's greetings, and the gathering, which was attended by a large number of people, concluded with, cheers.
