THROUGH BOOKING WANTED
"That the Government be again urged to adopt the scheme of through booking by rail and sea," was the , simple, broad remit moved by Mr J. j Tunnicliffc,.of Nelson, at the Farm-{ ers' Conference on Thursday in regard to disability of travel often felt, in ; crossing from the North Island to the South, i
The arguments advanced (reports the Post) were on similar lines to those . advanced in the past—for the ques- ; tion is not new to public discussion j by the Farmers' Union. The mover ; mentioned that the Post Office scheme ; for delivery of fruit, etc., was not ! being used, and the concession would ; probably be removed. What was \ wanted was through booking. '■ Mr J. Bell (Reefton) '.supported the proposal, which should apply to the whole of the Dominion.
The president (Mr J. G. Wilson) said it was undoubtedly a matter of some moment. The through-booking through the Post Office was not satisfactory, as it only referred to about 30 per cent, of the railway stations in New Zealand. A suggestion had
been, made to improve the system by jaf series of separate stamps to covers feilage.-freight at sea, and wharf sJkT otßer' costs, or in the alternative'5s a cwt. was suggested. In fhis way sufficient business might foe abne!t& make the scheme pay. The-T^iostniflster-Genera.l was consulting, with his officers with a view to introducing a suitable scheme to bring; producer and consumer into direct contact. The scheme at present was far too complicated. , Mr J. Tunnicliffe moved subsequently that the Minister be asked toconvene a conference of all interested in the scheme. This with the previous motion was adopted.
