MAYNE'S STRICTURES
ON ENGLISH UMPIRES
BAD METHODS OF SELECTION.
[press association.] (Received Jan, 17, 9.15 a.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 17
Mayne, a. member of the last Aus- | tralian Eleven., hotly criticises Eng- j lish. cricket umpires and the methods ; of their selection. Umpires, he says, I are appointed by the captains of : county teams, and in a majority of ! cases are old professional cricketers, i In the opinion of the colonials they ; are disposed to favor the Home teams ] in order to keep favor with those controlling their appointments. Mayne declares that the umpiring in test and county matches has been I inefficient for several seasons past, : and a radical change is absolutely '. necessary. He instances Bardsley | bern ggiven run out in the last test. ! Warner and "Ranji." admitted! that ■ this was the worst decision they had i ever seen. In the match against i Fry's Eleven at Bray, Hobbs walked I clean m front of the stumps to a■' straight ball from Hazlitt, and the' umpire said "In." A few overs later J Hobbs completed his 2000 runs for j the season in first-class cricket, and I the umpire exclaimed "Bravo"* Bardsley, on another occasion, tried' to mow a half-pitcher from Rhodes who was bowling round the wicket j to leg. He missed, and was given out l.b.w.
Mayne thinks that incompetencyis the cause, but many good judges on tie other side say that it is due to tho methods of selection
