A Wellington young lady the other day "rang up" the Rev. Mr Bates, Government Meteorologist, to ask him if it would be safe to buy a new dress for summer wear. His reply was short and to the point—"Never mind the dress; buy a, new macintosh!'*

In a heavy ffale on November 7, the. second steward, John Richmond, had -• his fight hand jammed in a door, with tha result that the hones of the fingers and hands were crushed, and broken, and the flesh badly lacerated. The unforunate man's hand was at once cleansed and bandaged, but on November 16 mortification set in, &siA in order to save The man's life, Captain Hayter decided to attempt to amputate the third and fourth fingers and a part of the hand. No anaesthetic was at hand, but the flesh of the hand was so badly decayed that the patient felt practically no pain. The operation was a great sucoess. The success of the operation is all the more credita.ble when it is taken into account that Captain Hayter had no previous surgical experience, and also that the ouly instruments at his dis- • posal were those contained in the ship's medical chest.
