SOLICITOR'S PECULIAR.

CONDUCT

CROWD CHEERS THE PRISONER

WHANGAREI, Nov. 5. Houston was committed for trial on charges of burglary, etc., yesterday. During the hearing of the charges a solicitor named Edmonds declared himself as counsel for the prisoner, and asked permission to have an interview with him.

The police objected, as counsel had not been engaged by the prisoner, and the Bench upheld the objection. Mr Edmonds then handed the prisoner a paper, which was quickly snatched by a detective. A scuffle ensued between the police and Mr Edmonds, who was finally thrown over a chair.

Mr Edmonds appeared on two later cases against Houston, and then abruptly left the Court without comment.

When the prisoner was being taken from the Court to the cells the crowd hooted the police and gave cheers for the prisoner.
