While he was conducting a service in Gitta di Castello Cathedral, Italy> vhe Bishop noticed among the congregation a girl, the sleeves of whose dress he considered were indecorously short. He immediately stopped his disco urse, and ordered the . girl to leave the church.

She refused, and he came down from the pulpit, and attempted to eject her. Several young men, including the son of, an Italian deputy, at once took the girl's part, and the Bishop retired to the sacristy. In the evening a demonstration took place before the episcopal palace, and when the Bishop appeared at a window, intending to address the populace, he was pelted with tomatoes and other vegetables and obliged to withdraw.
