DESTRUCTION BY FIRE
FACTORY BURNT!
-Shortly after mid-day the fire alarms attracted attention to an outbreak tnat had occurred in Messrs Kirby i and Martini's furniture factory in : Meehan Street, Islington. The buildassg, Avith practically the whole of the contents, was completely destroyed. The Firo Brigade responded promptly, and the engine was conveyed to the soeno in quick time by means of a motor-car—a> neyv and expeditious method of transportation, by the way —bub tho fire did its work rapidly, aud had full command before anything could be done to check it. Soon after noon Mr J. W. Kirby, one of the proprietors, put a "billy" on a gyts ring, and Had hardly turned away from it before flames burst forth. An engine worked by benzine stood close by, and it is supposed that a leak was" responsible' for the mishap. The oil engine, planing machine, band saw, eat of tools, and a quantity of furniture and timber were among the property destroyed. The building and ! contents -were-insured, for £175 in the j Cksardian office, but Messrs Kirby and Martini estimate that this does not ■caver much more than half their loss. A double shock of earthquake was fol.fr at Napior" at 11.23 last night. At 9 o'clock this morning Blenheim waft the warmest station in the Dominion, -having a temperature of 65. A lengthy sitting of the Mstrl-h-j rough Cricket Association took place on Saturday night, Mr E. S. Hylfcon presiding, while the following members were : present: Messrs C. N. ■Ftsk, J. H. Goulding, J. S. White, A. B. Watson, W, Gibb, J. A. Bottrell, and A. J. Fisher (secretary). Entries ior the Senior Cup competition were received from the Marshlands, Wairau (three teams), and Picton clubs, and for the junior competition from Pic--ton, Marshlands, High School, and Otiamalutu. Tlie 'Southland Association intimated that, owing ,fco proposed alterations in the rules governing the ■JHawke Cup contest; they would withdraw from the competition. 'fhe Association's, delegate was empowered to use his own discretion in voting when ' the proposed amendments came up for the consideration -of the head body. A total of 186 players were classified for the various clubs, and it was decided that all matches start on October 26th. Messrs Hylton and Fisk were appointed a sub-committee to arrange fixtures.
