The western district tennis championships, which wore postponed from June., resulted:—ln the singles, Horace Rice beat H. A. Parker—6-0, .6-1 • in the doubles, Horace and Edgar Rice beat T. R. Quill and Parker— 16-1,11-13,8-6. ' THAT BASEBALL MATCH. SYDNEY, Sept. 29. > Fearing that baseball playing by the Australian cricketers will give a false impression of the standard of the game in Australia, the New South Wales Association, which hopes- for a visit from an American team in a few years, has cabled to the National Baseball Cbniniission at New York stating that it objects to the Australian cricketers representing themselves as baseballers/ None of them are players. INTERNATIONAL TUG-OF-WAR. SYDNEY, Sept. 30. The following are the results of the tug-of-war contests;—ln the international event the Victorian Australians beat Fitzpatrick's Australians, Holland beat Sweden, and Russia, beat Italy. In the all-comers event North Sydney beat Farriers, and the Trolley and Draymen beat Bakers. HENLEY REGATTA. SYDNEY, Sept. 30. * The sub-committee appointed! by the New South Wales Rowing Association reported in favor of holding Henley Regatta, on the canal at Haberfield, provided' satisfactory arrangements can be made for enclosing sufficient land abutting the canal and that the right is acquired to charge admission. A deputation will seek Government sympathy and help. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. SYDNEY, Oct. 1. Dr Mjoberg, the Swedish explorer who had charge of the recent scientific research expedition in West Australia, will proceed shortly to Queensland to continue his investigations.' He intends to study especially the rain forests, where are to be found the last traces of Malayan vegetation. Dr Mjoberg considers' the aborigines are only primitive . Caucasians, who have, been living here for thousands | of years. Some specimens secured in jiorth-west Australia' are entirely new to science, including a small rodent, some birds, and ' numerous insects.©
