NEW YORK, Sept. 11. Mr Gaynor,. Mayor of the City, givino- evidence at the police investigation, admitted that 3,000,000 dollars ''graft" had been paid, yearly to the police by the liquor interests. Recently this had been entirely suppressed. While the force was certain to contain a proportion of incompetent, and .untrustworthy men, the general level of ■efficiency was higher than ever before. He admitted that the burglary insurance rates in New York had jumped 35 per cent, recently. ' BOOTH MEMORIAL.

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE CONFERENCE.
LONDON, Sept. 11. At the Chambers of Commerce Conference at Newcastle a resolution in favor of the appointment of a Minister for Commerce was negatived. Another was adopted recommending ■changes calculated to strengthen the influence and efficiency of the Board of Trade.
WHOLE FAMILY. MURDERED. LISBON, Sept. 11. The bodies of a peasant woman and her four children (one a baby) were found with their throats cut on the highway in the Montevalepaio province. . Alemtejo, the husband, was subsequently found ; similarly .murdered. The authorities are pursuing a suspected fugitive farmer.

JOURNALIST'S SUICIDE.
. PERTH, Sept. 12. Mr S. H. WhM^ker, chief of staff on the Melbourne Standard, committed sui-cufe by shooting himself. He had suffered from melancholia since his wife committed suicide last December. •
A MEXICAN THREAT
NEW YORK, Sept. 11. Advices received by the State Department indicate tthat' Mexicans greatly resent United States intervention, and declare that such action will embitter the country's Relations and other Republics. It may even jeopardise ■ the operation of the Panama Canal. ' "
