GERMAN CANALS.
AN IMPORTANT UNDERTAKING
TO HELP THE RAILWAYS.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
- LONDON, Aug. 15. Mr Koenig, British Consul-General in W^stphalia^ reports that the German Government is building a network of canals to cope with the increasing railway traffic. All the rivers running from "south to north into the Bjaltie and North Seas will be joined by a large canal from east to west, connecting the Rhine ... with , the Bmden. The Rhine will also be. made navigable to Basel, while the Moselle,. Saar, a.nd Lahn will be deepened ancl canaiised.
This policy is due to the success of the-Dortmund-Ems canal, the traffic on. which has "quadrupled in the last decade without lessening the income of the Sta,te railways. : "'■ ■'■■■-'
Negotiations are* proceeding with the , Netherlands, Switzerland, a-nd Austria regarding the proposed heavy dues en river.traffic.
