GILBERT KNEW THE PIANISTS.

The late Sir W. S. Gilbert, the librettist, once met Liebling, tho pianist, and the following interchange of courtesies occurred between them. Gilbert said:

"Sir, I have heard Liszt" - Liebling bowed his head in acknowledgment at what he supposed was the coming compliment. "I have heard Henry Hertz," continued! Gilbert.

"I ha,ve heaid Piaderewski." l«iebling m«de a. genuflexion evou unto the ground. <'Well,; sir/"' oontinueid Gilbert, in. abrupt tones, "riot one of the—not one of them; sir—perspired as profusely as you do."
