Detectives from Marseilles burrounded a house at Mazargnes ;.n which a maniac named Socpman had barricaded himself, after founding three people. The detectives broke in the door, and Socoman fired, wounding two, and then committed suicide.

A FATAL EXPLOSION. MELBOURNE, Sept. 19. Two men named Birch and Parker were . repairing a, gun metal pump plunger, and poured molten metal on it. A goods train ran into a. dead end! at Bulli, and several trucks were telescoped. Nobody was injuredl. WARRNAMBOOL-MELBOURNE RQAD RACE. MELBOURNE,, Sept. 19. The handicaps for the Warrnam-bool-Melbourne road race include the following New Zealanders:—O'Skea (scratch), A .B. L. Smith (2min.), Birch (5): S. T. Williams (8), Humm end B. Martin (10), Ferry and'Tozer <12), Donoghue and Prebble (16), Waldie (34). The acceptances close on .September 30th, and the race will take place on October 14th.
