THE CITY SUMMONS
The lonely stars first dipped their beams For mo in cowslipped meadow streams; The fields were green, tlie fields were white, Black-lining fences infinite; Each clod of earth found death or stir Where none save bird was traveller ; Uncompanied, I grew and found Monotony familiar ground. And then across my heaven afar There shone "one pale, magnetic star. I sold my tenure of content; Straight toward the man-made sky I went. I saw the City's straining street; I heard the music of its feet; Electric suns and moons burned there; Red poppies grew in women's hair; The lure of something always new Hummed at its gates—and I went through. —Ruth Kauffman.
