OPAWA v. WAITOHI
The first match of the season was glayed on Nelson Square, Picton, on aturday afternoon (writes pur correspondent). The game was timed to start at 3 o'clock, but the Opawas put in a late appearance, and it was-ten minutes to four when they kicked off. In the first three minutes Opawa. got away with a forward rush which forced Waitohi to the dead-ball line. An Opawa passing-rush ended in a pass forward. A Waitohi player being offside gave Opawa a shot at goal, which did not succeed. A fine line kick by Williams saw Waitohi in their opponents' twenty-five. Gibb had a shot at goal for Waitohi, which failed. After forcing Opawa, a Waitohi forward rush ended in Randall, scoring a try, which was not converted. A Waitohi player off-side gave Opawa another unsuccessful shot at goal. Soon afterwards Hegglun scored for Opawa, but Twomey failed to convert. At this stage a Waitohi player got knocked out, and the game was stopped for a few minutes. The first spell ended, Waitohi 3, Opawa 3. Waitohi started the second half by a good forward rush, but their opponents forced them to the dead-ball line. Opawa had a shot at goal from a penalty, but with no success. Gibb had an attempt for Waitohi, but failed to put the ball over the bar. Opawa were awarded a free kick in front of the Waitohi goal, and this j time they succeeded in piloting the j ball over the bar. Waitohi had hard I luck ip. not scoring. A home player marked near the goal, and Gibb just failed to put the ball over. Two players were now knocked out, one from each team. Waitohi pressed Opawa hard in the last ten minutes, but failed to score. The game ended in favor of Opawa by 6 points to 3. Mr J. H. Morrison, of Blenheim, acted as referee.
