A mail named Alexander McKenzie g leaded guilty at the Magistrates ourt in Christchurch on Tuesday to having acted as a bookmaker and laid totalisator odds on the Riccarton racecourse at Easter. He was fined £30 or three months' imprisonment on the first charge, and £20 or two months imprisonment on the second charge.
At the Magistrate's Court this morning the case Crombie v. Crombie, an application by Mrs C. F. Crombie for a separation order from her husband on the ground of persistent cruelty and habitual inebriety was called on, Mr McNab appeared for the complainant, and mentioned that the defendant had agreed to the application, and also to pay 17s 6d per week towards the support of his wife, and to give/ her custody of the youngest child. An order to this effect was made by Mr Evans, S.M.
Bernard McKenna pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court this morning to a charge of being found on licensed premises in Picton during the currency of a prohibtion order. Mr Evans, S.M., said he intended to impose a heavy fine, as he did not like any orders which he made to be broken," and he concluded that other magistrates were like-minded. The boisterous northerly winds that have been experienced of late have caused a sudden roughness in the sea, places at the northern end of this island having a rough time. The water was very rough at the Wairau Bar, Capo Campbell, Westport, Farewell Spit, and 'Greymouth. The river at Bealey was in a high ste.te of flood. Overcast skies were chiefly the order throughout, while rain was falling at Blenheim, Bealey, Cape Campbell, and New Plymouth. Russell was the warmest place, recording 69, which wae three degrees above the local reading, .md Bealey was coldest with 47. A very high tide was running at Westport, and good ones at New Plymouth und Dunedin. The unusual lownoss of the barometer is being maintained, and it seems as if the present bad weather will continue.

The annual meeting of the householders of Nydia Bay was held in the school on Monday evening. Mr Menzies was voted to the chair. The chaiiman of the outgoing committee read the balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £2 5s 6d. The following were elected «i committee for the ensuing year:—Messrs A. Beckham, James Craig, W. Fraser, J. Gould, and W. Gould. A motion in favor of a Dominion scheme for the promotion of teachers was carried unanimously. At a stibsequent meeting of the committee, Mr J. Gould was ejected chairman.
