THE WHANGARE MURDER.
FREEMAN'S BODY RECOVERED
[I'EESS ASSOCIATION.]
AUCKLAND, April 21. A message from Whakapara states that the body of Freeman was recovered in the Puhipuhi forest yesterday by Sergeant Moore. The prisoner is a stalwart youth, described as a ne'er-do-well. He led the party to the spot. The head was practically smashed to a pulp, and the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. It is stated that the tragedy occurred on Apr il sth. Freeman left his v/hare that day to go gum-digging, and was followed by the Maori into the bush. The Maori accosted Freeman, who appears to have resented the meeting, and defended himself with his gum1 spear. The prisoner is supposed to have struck Freeman on the side of the head, felling him,, and afterwards dealing two murderous blows while the man was on the ground.
