Victor Gaubert was arrested for i>he murder of his wife, Eliza, at the "village of Lappene, near .Marseilles.

Eliza disappeared in October, the husband alleging she had gone to the Mauritius. He later on announced her death and married Antoriia Sid■olles, a village girl, and left home ■for the honeymoon trip. During some repairs to- the house the workmen noticed the tiles in the scullery were uneven, and on investigation < discovered the body of Eiiza,.
Gravtbert states that Eliza and he Tiatl a violent altercation over Antonia. She suddenly dropped dead, and, fearing arrest, he buried the 'body. ■ - . ■
