The Grosvenor Hall was again well filled last night when the nightly session of the Olympia Skating Rink was m progress. The management are broad-minded enough to realise that learners are entitled to the floor as-much as thosfe who can skate; and, some good fun is provided by the novices. The skates in use are of the latest pattern, and some creditable skating is done by several of those who attend. The rink opens at 7,30 nightly, and is also open in the afternoon.

Maxwell Road is at present the best lighted street in the borough. Mr F. Taylor, manager of the gaswork^ and his staff have been engaged during the last two days in erecting and fitting up the newstreet lamps. Mounted on strong iron posts,, the .incandescent burners throw a bright white light far and wide, which is in pleasing contrast to the "dim, religious light" of the others.

To-night will seethe official opening of the rinking season at the Sown Hall. Everything has been arranged for the comfort of the rollers" and those .who will content themselves with looking on. There will be a grand march at 8 p.m.1, to the music of a full brass band. The stage and gallery will be reserved for those who do not don the "rollers " and those who do "rink" should make early application for skates. Attendants will be present to look after the comfort and convenience of patrons.

The stepping competition held at the Hibernian sports on St. Patrick's Day drew 72, entries, and great interest was taken in it, particularly by some of the veterans. Mr A. Sowman was the winner, stepping 65 yards 2ft 7in, the actual distance being 65yds 2ft 6fin. The sheepguessing competition also excited considerable interest. Mr A. Smith was the lucky, winner with a guess of 751bs, the actual weight of the sheep being 7o£lbs.

A FINE RECOMMENDATION. When a hotelkeeper or retailer tells you he sells only Thomson's Carbonated Waters and Cordials, he squares his shoulders and stands straighter. He knows as well as you do that his choics of the recognised leading brand of Australasia is a fine recommendation—one which raises him in your es-#mation, and gives his house an undisputed tone. Thomson and Co.:s name and their trademark "Purity" should be on the oappule, label, and wrapper of every bottle, otherwise \t is not genuine
