EXTREME HARDSHIP AND PRIVATION.

THURSDAY ISLAND, March 18

Mr Smith's party met with extreme hardship and privation, and had some extraordinary adventures.

They ascended the River Kikori for fifty miles, and then struck northeast through unknown country. They crossed three large rivers and followed one for 250 miles up from the coast, where they, encountered many rapids. The food supplies ran short and their only sustenance Avas palm pith. They turned back and constructed rafts to make the downward journey. Shooting the rapids several of the carriers were drowned, and finally they came to rapids extending for 150 miles, and were forced to abandon the river and make their way through rough country. The natives supplied them with food., and eventually they reached the river again and utilised the rafts, completing the journey.
