Mr James Newton has been appointed Inspector of Mines for the Westland, Karamea and Maritorough mining districts.
Mr T. L. Buick and Mrs Buick, of Dannevirke, left Wellington by the Ulimaroa yesterday en route for England.
Mr Henry Burling, the Waikanae centenarian, who celebrates his 110 th birthday on Ist May, is far from well (writes the Otaki correspondent of The Post). He had a fainting fit on Thursday that greatly upset him. In consequence he was unable to be present at his grandson's wedding.
Mr W. H. Vickers, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Picton, has obtained six months' leave of absence, and intends to take a trip to England. Mr H. Baillie, formerly of Picton, will have charge of the bank during Mr Vicker's absence.
Dr C. H. R. Pentreath, formerly of Blenheim, wasj at the last meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, appointed temporary medical superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital, pending the appointment of a permanent officer.
The Kiwi Hockey Club met last evening to bid ■ farewell to Mr. D. Robertson, who is leaving for Wellington to-day. Mr C. N. Fisk (captain) on behalf of the members presented Mr Robertson with a silver shaving-mug as a token of esteem, and hoped that ho would still continue his services oh the hockey field. Mr. EL Paine, vice captain, also added, a few words of appreciation of Mr. Robertson's services toward the Club. Mr. Robertson suitably responded.
Mr J. T. Muir, who is directing the Dolores tour, is well-known in the world or management. He has been on three tours with Mile. Dolores, and has been connected with most of the best people in the concert line. He is very pleased with the "West Coast and . Marlborough, andi ha-s signified his intention of returning shortly with one of the world's Jsad'ing baritone singers. The Dolores combination left for Picton by the 4 p.m. train to catch the Wellington boat. .
Captain S. V. Trash (late staff officer to Colonel Robin), at present acting as assistant-adjutant-general, Wellington district, has been attached to the administrative branch at district headquarters, Wellington. Captain Trask some three years ago contracted an illness which has prevented him from carrying out active outside duties, and, acting on medical advice, applied to be transferred to the administrative branch. Captain Trask will still retain his present rank in the reserve of officers.
The death of Mrs E. W. Seager, wife of Mr E. W. Seager, for many years connected with the public service in Canterbury, removes another of the old colonists. Mrs Seager, who arrived with her family in-, one of the early ships, was the fourth daughter of Mr T., Coster, of Christchurch, and was married in 1854. As matron of the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, where she had charge of all the female patients for many years, Mrs - Seager _ evinced great powers of organisation, /added to much kindliness. She leaves six daughters and three sons.
