EDUCATION BOARD.

The Maryborough Education Board met yesterday atternoon, the menfo hers present being: Messrs R. Mm Callum (Chairman), J. J. White,'"l 3. Ferguson, J. Fulton, H. M. Readerf J. S. Storey, E. H. x'enny, and J Conolly

FINANCE,

The secretary submitted the following financial statement, which was approved: Administration account, ■dr., £50 12s 3d; teachers' salaries account, cr., £27 12s 6d; manual and technical account, dr., £201, ps 7d; building account, cr., £487 14s Bd. Credit balance to March 13th, 1911, £263 8s 4d. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £184 6s 2d were passed for payment. GROVETOWN SCHOOL. Two tenders for fencing the Grovetown school property were received, and that of Messrs Ward and Sons of £34 was accepted. The Chairman said that during the month the sub-committee appointed by the Board had secured five perches of land from Mr D. Cameron for the purpose of extendirig the land attached to the master's residence. The price paid was £12 10s. The conditions under which the Board got this land were that it shifted back Mr Cameron's fence and also provided him with a gate. The action of the sub-committee was endorsed. APPOINTMENTS. The following . appointments. were approved by the Board: Black Rock, Miss 0. McMahon; Laverique Bay, Miss L. Hood; Waikakaho, Miss M. Catley; Pelorus Sound. Miss Lehrke; Waitata Bay r Miss V. Murphy; Okukari, Miss A. Martyns; Richmond Bay, Miss G. Owen-Jones. A NEW FLOOR. The Havelock Suburban., School Committee wrote asking to have a new floor placed in the school, pointing out that ,the, present floor was »»-. safe. The post would be about £12; Mr Fulton said that the floor, was in bad order, and required attention* He thought it necessary to do something. Mr Reader said it would not cost more than £15 to have new> piles put in, in addition to the new floor. The whole work would not cost more than £15 or £16. Messrs Reader and Fulton were authorised to make inquiries as to the. probable cost of this work and to call for tenders, to be in by the next meeting of the Board. WATER WANTED. The chairman of. the Carluke School Committee wrote pointing out that since the mid-summer holidays the pupils had had to endure i much inconvenience owing to there, being an insufficient supply of water. He understood that Mr Mclsaac had power, according to an agreement, to turn off the water whenever he chose to do so. He asked if this were the case. In connection with this matter Mi? J. H. Lambert forwarded a copy of an agreement entered into by the i Carluke School Committee with Mr Mclsaac,, which stated that Mr McIsaao had power to use the water only for his own house, but that the Committee should not interfere witTi his water-supply. The Chairman, moved, and Mr Reader seconded, that the Board provide a tank for the school; in the meantime the secretary to inquire, into the cause of the shortage of water.—Carried. A RING FENCE. It was decided to Fence the school reserve at Mahakipawa, provided the adjoining owners paid half the cost. GRANTS WANTED. The Ward School Committee applied for grants for several small items required at the school. These were approved, and the amounts included in the accounts and passed for payment. PIANO SUBSIDY. A letter was received from the Havelock School Committee asking for a subsidy on the amount raised locally for the school piano. It was decided to grant a subsidy of £1 for every £1 raised. SUBSIDY FOR A LIBRARY. Mr Graham, secretary of the ,Fairhall School Committee, wrote stating that the school had won £2- 13s 6d at the A. and P. Society's Show, and it was proposed to spend it on a school library. He asked the Board1 to allow tho usual subsidV. It "was decided to grant 10s for every pound raised. DESKS. The Pictpn, ScEool Committee applied for 45 dual desks. The Inspector reported that the Picton desks were in good order. The Chairman moved, and Mr Penny seconded that Messrs Conolly and Ferguson be a committee to confer with the Picton Committee on this matter and report to the next meetign of the Board.—Carried. A NEW SCHOOL WANTED. An application was received for a new school at tfie Eai Valley, or as an alternative to have the present school extended. It was decided to forward the application to the Education ._ Department with the recommendatiin that 6he school be extended. 6PRINGLANDS REQUIREMENTS. The Springlands School Committee wrote asking for a grant of £6 to cover the cost -of erecting a new fence and gravelling a portion of the school ground. The Inspector thought £6 twice as •nuch as was needed. Mr Reader moved, and. the Chairaan seconded, that tenders be called lor the erection of a new fence, and he placing of a new sky-light in the niddle room of the school.—Carried. In regard to the application for a <irant for gravel, it was decided that the Committee pay for this out of its ordinary revenue. KEKERANGU. Mr P. McLaughlin. chairman of the j Kekerangu School Committee, wrote asking the Board to supply them with j desks and other requisites. The Chairman moved, and Mr Storey seconded, that the matter of ■desks' be referred to the Inspector with power to act, and tEat the other requisites asked for be granted.— 'Carried.
