' i At tlie annual meeting^ the Feilding centre of the New Zealand Athletic Union, it was decided to have nothing to do with the proposed North Island Athletic Association, suggested from Auckland, but to stick to the old Union. PAINTER'S FATAL FALL. WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. A man named Jas. Barron, a painter, while working on the wall of ! the Princess Hotel, fell faom a- ladder about 16 feet this afternoon. He I struck the edge of' a lean-to and frac--1 tured his skull. He.was taken to hospital, where he died. . Barron was about 40 years of age. A WOMAN'S DEATH. WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. Mrs Teresa Sims, ' aged 63, was found in the wash-House" of her residence on September" Bth, with a broken leg, the result of a fall. After she was taken to hospital she contracted acute bronchitis, which was followed by amputation of the fractured limb. The leg was amputated, "but the bronchitis became worse, and the patient died yesterday morning. At the inquest a verdict was returned in accordance with the foregoing facts. THE UNION COMPANY. WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. The Prime Minister this afternoon received the following telegram from Mr Holdsworth, manager of the Union Steamship Company:—"l have pleasure in informing, you that the Union Company has contracted with the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company, ; Glasgow, for a sixteeriVknot passenger steamer for the inter-colonial trade. She will "be 430 feet long, 55 feet 6in. beam,, and, compared , with the i Marama, will "be larger, faster, and in every way superior. The contract i time for completion is August 19th, 1911, and the vessel should be in service in the Dominion twelve months from now. The cost delivered.will be, I -approximately, £200,000."' i The annual, meeting of St. Andrew's Eawn^Tenius QLub was held last evening in, St. 'Andrew's- Hall, there being about 30 members present. Mr A. McCaHum presided. > REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The report, suggesting a number of improvements to the grounds, and showing how £60" had been spent last year, -was adopted. The balance-sheet showed, a debit of £28, and the balance" of [ assets over liabilities to be £70. '~'.. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as ■follows:—President, ,Mr A. McCallum: vice-presidents, Rev. W. 0. Robb and Messrs T. .W. Orr, R. McCallum, C. iF. A.. Whiteford, F. W. Dodson, and J. Hay; general committee, Messrs W. Smaill, T. Payne, H. Horton, Mrs Dodson, and Miss Harding; auditor, Mr W. Smaill; Tiandicap and selection committee, Mrs Dodson , and Messrs H. Horfcon and S. W. Parker; secretary, Mr S. W. Parker; treasurer, Mr D. Robertson. THE ASSOCIATION. The members decided to join the Marlboroug"h Tennis Association, provided the Association was a more "live" body than it had been in the past, and Mr Horton was appointed the club's delegate. > CARETAKER.' The question of appointing a caretaker was discussed, and it was decided' to appoint Mr P. W. Hadfield for the coming season. APPRECIATION. Mr On- referred to the good work done by the lady members during last season. He pointed out that they had raised sums of money from time to time until £23 had been raised for the grounds > and the improvements carried out. At Mr Orr's suggestion a hearty vote •of thanks was accorded the ladies. OPENING DAY. The opening day was" fixed for' October Bth: - NEW MEMBERS.' Twenty, new members'we're elected/ and the meeting closed. •
