A resident of New Plymouth had a 'carious experience (says the Taranaki Herald), which has convinced him that rats and Vax matches are sometimes the cause of fires. ,He is alight sleeper, and- was disturbed by a rat which apparently was carrying someSng from the*oom behindthe.scrim and paper of the wall, ' Presently he lieard a "fizz," and saw a flash p* light behind the scrimY Jumping out of bed he smothered the fire with, his bare hands, and found that it arose from a plaid box of vestas, which the a-at had evidently ignited. Had he not been a light sleeper the house would probably have been destroyed and possibly he and his have lost 4heir lives. The moral is that peoplo should be careful to keep wax matches «Dufc of the way of rats.
