[press association.]
(Received Sept. 19, 8.55 a.m.) j HOBART, Sept. 18. , ,Dr. Tbacker, of 'Christchurch ? one 'of Arnst's backers, who is aboard'the , 'Tongariro, stated that the 'Zambesi ' was in some places quite shallow, and then sudHenly became Heep. "When the wind? Blew it was quiibe rough. At > certain bends on the day of -the race i the waves were fourteen inches high, and the men hiad a big head-wind, to row against. Both complained that after the first half-mile they hail a (burning feeling in the throat. This wias probaßly due to excessive sweats ing and excessive 'glandular secretions. iThis probably stopped Barry at the end of the race. After twelve strobes from the start Arnst was two'lengths ahead, and maintained his .lead all-the. >way. -When within half a 'mil© of. home Barry .seemed to hesitate. .He then, pulled himself together, and' made a really surprising and-magnifi-' .cent spurt for about thirty or forty .strokes. Arnst never -altered .bis stroke. Barry nearly approached his tboat, when he collapsed, but finished ths 'course. It was a really good ;r,ace, but Barry .admitted that, he had no. idea that ishe man he was -fco .meet had such silafl .and power. . .Dr. Thacker .added that ,he had practically completed arrangements .'for ,Amst and tßarry to row on 'the ■ Thames in July mext.
