Leaving town at 2 o'clock on Fri- ' dayj, i%KMa#Q^ghl team,'after a j trood. journey' -reached Havelock soon after 7» o'clock, a stop having been; i made at Okaramoi for tea. The tsam i 1 and officials w-ejre, the guests of thej Pelorus Sub-Uni6h at their annual; social, which was an exceptionally! well-conducted affair, the supper be-: ing an■■ espeeiaj; feature. The team remained until the supper adjournment, when all retired. The weather' was fine for the match next day, but a strong wind was blowing straight up the ground. The playing field, which is situated in Brownie© Park, was a very aivkward one for a visitin« team to play on, having a very decided down-hill grade, and being short both in lengsi and in width, i Pelorus won the toss, and Sheridan kicked off up hill. The cardinal forwards took play into Pelorus quar- i ! ters, but seemed to have no luck, and as the team was playing rather : raggedly any chances of scoring were missed. The game' was played m four spells, and on changing ends 'Pelorus pressed' Marlborough hard ! for some time; The visiting backs, | were, however, equal to the -occasion* 1 and cleared, andplay hung for some : time v<m the Pelorus line-, when the, ; local forwards, by a! fine concerted i I rush, cleared their territory .and i \ carried play to »r Marlborough : quarters. Maher, the: full-back, mis--1 judged his kick against the wind, i and the ball rebounded off the black I forwards. Gibb and Twidle raced for 1 the ball, the latter touchftig down. 1 and gaining a well-merited try,. The , kick at goal was a failure, and half- ! time ensued with the score Pelorus 3, Marlborough nil. .' j . On play being resumed it was at once seen that Marlborough were playing quite a different ,gam©> SchVass and Patchett carried play +o Pelorus 25, and being centred the ball, where the backs took charge, arid after a pretty bout of passing Lambert ran over,' Gibb converting the try. Soon afterwards Patchett scored from a forward rush, Gibb converting. The next score was 1 gained by Ruddick, Gibb again converting, and the third, quarter ended l'Maryborough 13, Pelerus 3. In the' final quarter of the game Pelorus were penned in thejr own 25. s Tries were gained by Patchett, Schwass(S) and Gibb, none of which were converted.
