Th© death is announced of Long- :• fellow's "Village Blacksmith," at the i age of seventy-six. He was Thad- { deus W. Tyler, of Yyiin, near Boston, j U.S.A. To his children Mr Tyler I pften told of his acquaintance with' \ the poet while he worked in a blackj smith's shop at Cambridge, Mass. I Longfellow showed him the "Village | Blacksmith," he said, aft&r he had j written it. He was born in Warren, ■ and went to Boston in 1844. He ran ; the first engine ever used in the ! manufacture of shoes, and originated ; the moulded stiffening for shoes. He , and his wife celebrated their golden '■ wedding in 1903.
