LOWER WAIRAU RIVER BOARD.
The Lower Wairau River Board met last night, when the following members were present: Messrs F. Adams (Chairman), A. McCallum, E. S. Parker', and W. Carr. s A DEPUTATION. \ deputation consisting of Messrs T. Pike, W. Mapp, and D. O'Dwyer waited upon the Board and asked that the flood-gates in the drain running to the sandhills be readjusted. It was decided that the Inspector attend to this matter, and report to the next meeting. , TENDERS. It was decided that tenders be called for the work of raising the protective bank at the Taylor bridge. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector reported that he did ! not consider it necessary to construct a protective bank round Patties bend on the Dillon's Point Road, but suggested .that if the low places on the road were rounded up for a distance of about 10 dhains at a cost of £8 that would meet the requirements. There were about 10 chains of low-lying country on Mr McArtney's property which would require raising, which would not exceed £15. There was no immediate danger
to Mr Hayward's property,, as the_ erosion in the river was about 10* chains from the flood-bank. The willows in the Opawa River at the rear of Dodson's required cutting, and Mr Linstrom had offered to do. this if granted a grazing right over the property. He recommended that some willow stumps in the Taylor River near Mr Simmonds's property be removed. It was resolved that tenders be called for keeping the willows down on the Opawa River, and that the Dillon's Point Road embankment be done by day labor. The Inspector's recommendation that the stumps in the Taylor River be removed was adopted, and a suggestion made by Mr Carr that the water channel in the Taylor River be cleared 100 ft. wide was agreed to. RATES. The Chairman moved that the rates be one-fifth of "a penny in the £ on classes one and two,. one-eleventh of a penny in the £ on the special £5000 loan, and one-ninth of a penny in the £ on the loan of £10,000. Mr Parker seconded the motion, which was carried BANK SECTION. Mr Carr moved, and Mr McCallum seconded, that tenders be called for lease of Section 5, Omaka, for grazing purposes.—Carried. THE OMAKA RIVER. . Messrs Carr, Adams, and Parker were appointed to interview Mr Davies on the subject of obtaining permission to take a portion of his property fronting the Omaka River for the purpose of straightening that stream. WILLOW-PLANTING. The Inspector was authorised to commence willow-planting in July, wherever necessary, and also to report to the next meeting on the condition of the bank at Laery's Breach. ACCOUNTS. Aocounts amounting to £86 16s 9d were passed for payment, and the Board rose.
