A PLUCKY RESCUE.
Mrs Margaret Kelly, a widow, aged 63, living in Melbourne, had an exciting experience early on Saturday morning, 21st inst. On Friday night, on retiring to rest, she left a lighted lamp on a small table at her bedside. The only other occupant of the house was a little girl named Katie Murray, who, at four a.m., was awakened hy a loud carsh. She next heard cries from Mrs Kelly, and on rushing into her room she found that the lamp had been capsized and had fallen tinder the bed of the woman. The apartment was filled with smoke, and the bed covering was on fire. Mrs Kelly, who was much excited, was kneeling on the floor, and was apparently unable to make her escape. The girl dashed a bucket of water on the flames, partially extinguishing them. She then seized Mrs Kelly by the arms and dragged her into the passage in a dazed condition, after which she aroused Mrs Smith, a next-door neighbour. Mrs Smith, with the assistance of other persons, dragged Mrs Kelly out of the house, and just as they gained the open the whole building, which consisted of five rooms, was enveloped in flames, and -was soon totally destroyed. The old lady was badly affected by the smoke.
