HOW A DEAF AND DUMB MAORI
WAS KILLED
SHOT BY ANOTHER NATIVE.
AUCKLAND, May 31. The Supreme Court is occupied with a charge against a native, Watetu Purua, who is alleged to have murdered another Maori, Te Maua Horomeno, at Waingaro. Accused's mate, who was with him when the fatal shot was fired, deposed that they saw a black object approaching, which they challenged in Maori and English. Receiving no reply the prisoner fired. Subsequently he was much distressed when he found he had shot dead a deaf and du^nb Maori. Witness said they believed the object shot at was a ghostAsked by the judge if he_ tnought ghosts would do any harm, witness re?>lied: "We find old people in the vilage who have spoken about bad people ever since I was a child. I thought this object was what they had been speaking about; that a ghost had come at last." i
The case is proceeding.
