An interesting discovery was made the Mount % Eden gaol during the progress of ' road-making operations. hillside has been cut down for a .depth of about sixty feet. Heavy rocks and other volcanic matter was removed from above a bed of slaty clay. In this, stratum was exposed the trunks of three trees, tho largest -eighteen inches ■ in diameter, which must have been levelled during a volcanic disturbance and have lain buried for centuries. The wood is in. a perfect state of preservation, even ■fche bark being intact, and as easy to jSitrip as that of newly-felled trees.
