FOR SOCIALISM AND PROTECTION.
AUSTRALIA'S ECONOMIC TROUBLES.
[PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] (Received April 3, 5 p.m.) LONDON, April 2. The Spectator says: Population is* the principal element in Australian! prosperity and the defence of home.. It is satisfactory to know that public* opinion in Sydney is not quite easy about the situation. Married couple* with families are naturally' not welcomed on stations worked on th& lines suggested by the Rev. Mr Matthews's letter, but taxing employers out of existence will nofe benefit married couples washing it* retain both situations and children* More generous treatment of managers and workmen by joint stock companies and non-resident squatterswould probably in the end yield better servants and larger profits. Atthe bottom of half the economic troubles of which we hear so much lies excessive taxation in behalf of , Socialism, otherwise called social reform, and protection under some equally delusive alias., Until thiserror is corrected the mischief mentioned has a poor chance of abatement.
