[from our correspondent.] Saturday

The Easter Saturday sports went off very well. The Maiden footrace was won by M. Campbell (Wellington), J. B. Read (Havelock) being second. The Easter Handicap fell to J. Priddle (Blenheim) with A. Draper (Blenheim) second. Draper also won Mr Karsten's trophy. The 440 was also won by J. Priddle with E. Karsten second. Karsten won Messrs Elsmore and Patchett's trophy, a handsome medal. The Half-mile was won by W. Terrill (Blenheim) Ewart (Blenheim being second. The Hurdles was won by J. Jackson (Blenheim) with J. Strickland (Blenheim) second. The Running High Jump was won by G. Mortimer (Okaramio), C. Patterson (The Grove) being second. Tilting at the Ring: B. Anderson (Canvastown) first, E. Wells (Canvastown) second. Throwing l*6lb Hammer: J. Dillon first. Married ladies' race: Mrs Cain first, Mrs Cain wins Mr Webster's box of tea. Mrs Hart was second, and Mrs Brunning third. This .lady wins a bottle of Karsten's embrocation. The Consolation Handicap was won by Mclntyre (Blenheim) Strickland (Blenheim) being second.

A rather small gate was taken this time. The local people did not swell the gate money much by their appearance on the field. The committee are grateful to the Blenheim people on the splendid support they gave the club. The Nelson people also came forward with donations.

The committee have several trophies left overhand I understand they are going to hold progressive euchre parties throughout the winter to raise funds to make a good track on the Canvastown sports ground. The Golden Bar proprietary are making good progress. They are busy erecting a 12-stamper battery, and in about three months' time crushing will be making a start. Thisit is hoped, will be a big success. If so it will be the means of opening up several reefs on the old Wakamarina.

John Mason and party are making good progress with their claim on Quail's Terrace.

Smart Bros.' sawmill is still idle. It will be some time before the land on the west side of the Wakamarina is opened up at this rate of working the bush out. The settlers are beginning to grumble, as they consider that the land should be given over to people who will make use of it.
