HOW WOLGAST BEAT BATTLING NELSON.

We had the bare results of the great fight for the world's lightweight championship the other day, but the following should prove of interest as showing how Battling Nelson met his Waterloo at Sari Fran-

In spite of the unfavourable weather there was an- attendance of 37,----000, and both.men met with, a great reception. Owing to a misunderstanding Nelson failed to appear in the ring until half an hour after the appointed time. Eddie Smith was the referee, and bettng was 2 to 1 on the holder of the title.

Up to. the fourth round Wolgast led on points, but the fifth round was Nelson's. In the fifth round both men seemed tired. From that however, to the eleventh term Nelson took the lead.

Coming up for the eleventh time both men seemed determined to force the fighting, and in the last half minute of that round more damage was done than in the whole of the preceding ten rounds. Then followed a comparatively quiet time for a couple of terms, •during which Wolgast led on points, but in the fourteenth Nelson forced his opponent through the ropes. The "Battler" assisted him back to the ring.

Mixed fighting followed, Wolgast leading in the fifteenth. The sixteenth round was again Nelson's, although he was bleeding from the nose and ears, which were much damaged. Up to this time Wolgast was unmark-

The seventeenth round was fairly even, but Nelson's face was showing great sings of punishment. Wolgast

was putting in some powerful blows over the kidneys, and was doing good work on breaking from the clinches. From then to the twenty-third round Wolgast continued to lead, , and the betting then changed to even money. Wolgast led in the : twenty-fourth round, and in the next he staggered Nelson with three rights to the side of the head.

In the 26th round he swung some heavy rights on to Nelson's kidneys, and he had all the best of the period. Beginning the 27th round, Nelson's left eye was almost closed, and he was clinching to save himself. The 28th round was tame, there oeing 110 advantage on either side. Of the 29th Wolgast had a shade the best, and also of the next two rounds. The 32nd period saw Wolgast leading strongly, Nelson being badly punished. The same thing continued through rounds 33 and 34, and in the 35th Wolgast lifted his opponent clean off his feat. There was now a big margin in favour of Wolgast, who easily led through rounds 36 and 37. Nelson was badly tised up in round 38, and could only hobble to his corner.

Round 39 Avas much the same, and in the 40th Nelson's chance \vas so hopeless that the referee stopped the fight and declared Wolgast the winner.
